Sun Tzu said: Warfare is the great affair of state, the matter of life and death, the road to survival or ruin; it must not be neglected. Therefore it is to be examined by five factors and compared by seven calculations to determine the facts: first, the Way; second, Heaven; third, Earth; fourth, the commander; fifth, method and discipline.

By the Way I mean the people being in harmony with their ruler, willing to live and die with him and unafraid of danger. By Heaven I mean yin and yang, cold and heat, and the timing of the seasons. By Earth I mean distances and terrain—high and low, near and far, dangerous and safe, wide and narrow, and grounds of life and death. By the commander I mean wisdom, trustworthiness, benevolence, courage, and strictness. By method and discipline I mean organization, the chain of command, and the control of expenditure. Every commander has heard of these five things; the one who understands them will win, and the one who does not will not. Therefore compare them by seven calculations to learn the truth: Which sovereign has the Way? Which commander is capable? Which side has Heaven and Earth in its favor? Which side enforces laws and orders? Which has stronger forces? Which has better-trained troops? Which has clearer rewards and punishments? By these I know who will win and who will lose.

If a commander listens to my plan and employs it, retain him; if he does not listen to my plan and will surely fail in employing it, dismiss him. Calculate the advantages and secure his adherence; then create strategic momentum to support operations beyond the immediate theater. Momentum is shaping power in response to advantage. Warfare is the way of deception. Therefore, when able, appear unable; when employing forces, appear not to; when near, appear far; when far, appear near. Offer bait in the form of gain; exploit disorder; attack where the enemy is unprepared; prepare against an enemy whose forces are sound; avoid one who is strong. Anger them and throw them into confusion; humble yourself to make them arrogant; give them no rest when they are at ease; divide those who are united. Attack where they are unprepared; appear where you are not expected. This is the victory of the military strategist, and it must not be disclosed beforehand.

Those who are victorious before battle have made many calculations; those not victorious have made few. Many calculations bring victory; few calculations do not bring victory—how much less for those who make none? From this observation I can see who will win.
