English translation
Sun Tzu said: In the methods of warfare, a commander takes orders from the sovereign, unites the forces and gathers the troops. On broken ground do not linger; at crossroads join with allies; on cut-off ground do not remain; when surrounded, devise plans; on fatal ground, fight. There are roads one must not take, armies one must not attack, cities one must not besiege, terrain one must not contest, and sovereign commands one must not accept. Therefore a general who understands how to exploit the advantages of the Nine Changes knows how to employ troops; a general who does not understand the advantages of the Nine Changes, though he knows the lay of the land, cannot gain its benefits; one who organizes troops without knowledge of the Nine Changes, though he knows the terrain's advantages, cannot make effective use of his men.

Therefore the wise man's deliberations always mix considerations of benefit and harm: mixed with benefit he attends to what is attainable; mixed with harm he seeks dangers that can be resolved. Thus one bends the feudal lords by pointing to harms, conscripts them by appealing to obligations, and draws them forward by offering benefits.

Hence in the art of war do not rely on the enemy not coming; rely on being prepared to meet him. Do not rely on him not attacking; rely on possessing positions or conditions that cannot be successfully attacked.

Therefore a general has five dangers: one who resigns himself to death can be slain; one who clings to life can be captured; one quick to anger can be despised; one overly punctilious in integrity can be humiliated; one too fond of his people can become burdened. These five are a commander's faults and the disasters of employing troops. When an army is overturned and a general killed, it is always because of one of these five dangers; they must not be neglected.
